Growing your own edible garden can be extremely satisfying, if done right.

Here are our best tips and tricks for making a stunning edible garden:
- Plant what you want to eat
It can be hard to find the motivation (especially during winter!) to stick to a gardening routine. The trick here is to plant what you want and like to eat, so you’re more inclined to make gardening a habit. It also ensures that food doesn’t go to waste, as you’re growing what you like and want.
- Think about the layout
As well as planting what you like, think about how you’d like your edible garden to look. A beautifully designed garden will encourage you to spend more time outside, tending and caring for your plants.
Try raised beds as you can keep the shape, size and height uniform. It also means you can control the quality of the soil. Layout paths that are comfortable and wide enough for you to weed plants through and go for materials that feel comfortable underfoot.
- To-may-toe, to-mah-toe
Tomatoes are often considered as the gateway plant to gardening. With a number of different delicious varieties to choose from, you’ll be spoilt for choice with this easy homegrown hero. Hence why many choose to grow these, not just in gardens, but also commonly on farms for commercial purposes.
But when choosing to plant tomatoes in your garden, try to choose an area well exposed to the sun, as they’ll need about 57 to 8 hours of sunlight. Tomatoes also love compost, so make sure you’ve got plenty on, as well as a moist soil and mulch.
- Add flavour and fragrance with herbs
Basil, fennel, mint, parsley, thyme and Coriander cilantro are some of the more easier herbs to grow. They basically just need the correct amount of sunlight (which is less for mint, coriander and parsley), good drainage and regular water for them to thrive and flourish.
If you’re after fragrance/herbs that also act as a feast for the eyes, go for lavender, dill, rosemary, Thyme and oregano for extra visual appeal.
- Go green
Your basic leafy greens like lettuce, kale and arugula/rocket are a perfect choice for an edible garden. They’ll not only act as a staple for your salads, but also provide your garden with vibrancy and colour. Edible plants like these are also really easy to grow and look after; they just need to be kept evenly moist.
What’s also great about leafy greens is that you can simply cut a few leaves off each plant as you need, without having to pull out and accidentally destroy what’s growing. Key tip here is to plant seeds in succession, so you’ll always have something on hand to harvest and eat.
- Flower power
Edible plants and flowers are a great way to take your garden to the next level. Liven up your culinary creations with flowers like nasturtiums, violas, daisies, marigolds, chamomile, carnations and zucchini flowers.
Word of warning, make sure you triple check what flowers are edible or not, as some can be poisonous and harmful if ingested like black bean, oleander, spurge and nightshade.
